Abbreviations:

the long and the short of those strange codes

Here you will find commonly used abbreviations and their meanings.

K - knit

P - purl

st - stitch

stst - stocking stitch, also known as stockinette - 1 row of knit followed by 1 row of purl.

RS - right side - the side of the work which will be outermost when worn

WS - wrong side - the side of the work which will be innermost when worn.

MC - main colour yarn

CC - contract colour yarn

Inc - increase - if not specified then use your preferred method

yfwd - yarn forward - bring the yarn between the needles to the  front of the work.

Sl - slip the next st on the left hand needle to the right hand needle without knitting it.

K2tog - knit the next 2 sts together as one (a decrease)

psso - pass the slipped st over the next knitted stitch

dec - decrease - if not specified then use your preferred method

P2tog - purl the next 2 sts on the needle together as one (a decrease)

SSK - slip, slip, knit - slip the next 2 sts as if to knit, then knit them together. (a decrease)

x - times - e.g. rep 2 x = repeat 2 times.

rep - repeat
